Road to Nationals: 6 Questions with Oberlin Flying Horsecows
We're interviewing a few Savage teams that are headed to D-III College Championships May 19-20 in Illinois. Next up: Oberlin College's Flying Horsecows. Thanks to Jonathan Karpatkin for answering these totally invasive questions for us.

Savage: Does your team have any pre-game rituals?
Jonathan Karpatkin: Our pre-game rituals vary pretty wildly from game to game. There's the usual team warm ups and drills, and one of our usual team cheers. I think a lot of players have their own personal rituals.


Savage: How do you celebrate a win? Mourn a loss?
J.K.: We celebrate wins and mourn losses the same way. We circle our handshake line back around and high-five each other. We used to say "rise" to each other while we did this especially after a tough loss to bring us back up, but it's since morphed to the point where we say thighs (Shoutout to Tadhg Young and the Tasteful Thighs), eyes, skies, rye, fly, really any word that rhymes with "rise."

Savage: Favorite place to practice?
J.K.: Our normal practice location is North Fields, open space north of our athletic complex. In the winter we're not allowed to practice there, though, so we practice indoors in a turf field house, or occasionally under the lights on our turf football field, Bailey. Late-night practices are inconvenient, but they're special experiences and the team goes to our late-night meal afterward!

Savage: Favorite team hype song?
J.K.: This season we've been psyching ourselves up with "Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!" by Vengaboys, but in the past we've jammed to "Boogie" by John Hartford and "BLKKK SKKKN HEAD" By Kanye West at 4x speed. 

Savage: Favorite team beverage?
J.K.: Milk or pickle juice, depending on the time of day ;)

Savage: Oberlin's MVP?
J.K.: I think it's safe to say our most valuable player is our Donovan nominee, Toby Harvey. He was a captain last year (shadow captain this year) and he anchors our offense with consistent handling and incredible frisbee IQ. He's also unarguably the hardest worker on our team, playing almost every point of entire tournaments without seeming to slow down and doing more lifting and conditioning than anyone else on the squad. 

Our most valuable person, though, is our coach, Jessica Mast. Her perfect in-game adjustments have brought us back from major deficits at halftime and her smart drills and coaching have improved us all as players and a team. Our season would be over if it wasn't for her.

Road to Nationals: 8 Questions for Mary Washington's MOG
We're interviewing a few of the Savage-sponsored teams that are headed to D-III College Championships May 19-20 in Illinois. Next up: Mary Washington's Mother of George, a team that's close to our little Savage hearts (since most of us are UMW alums). Check out our chat with the University of Richmond Spidermonkeys over here. 
Savage: Any pre-game rituals? 
MOG's Harper James: Like most teams, we have our cheers that we like to do, but more recently our thing to pump up has just been getting as loud as we can shouting in our huddle to bring up energy.
Savage: How do you celebrate a win?
H.J.: A win during a tournament is celebrated and we take time to highlight the positives of the game before going into the next one. A tournament win is celebrated with a full rest day the Monday afterward.
Savage: And mourn a loss?
H.J.: We try not to dwell too long on a loss. Instead we talk about what we can learn from it and take into our next games. Although last year after missing Nationals by one point there were definitely some tears and a drive all season long to not feel that again.
Savage: Favorite place to practice?
H.J.: Our favorite place to practice outside of our practice field is on Ball Circle on campus just throwing around.
Savage: Hype song?
Keys Pattie edit: "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes
Savage: Favorite team beverage?
H.J.: Water? hydrate or diedrate.
Savage: MVP?
H.J.: A lot of people, probably Zach Norrbom at the top of that list.
Savage: Favorite team to compete against?
H.J.: Teams like Navy, where they are a very athletic team with fun competition but the game never gets chippy or angry.

Road to Nationals: 6 Questions for the University of Richmond Spidermonkeys

Over the next few weeks, we'll be interviewing a few of the Savage-sponsored teams that are headed to D-III College Championships May 19-20 in Rockford, Ill. We're starting off with our own hometown heroes, the University of Richmond Spidermonkeys. Chris Selwood answered our burning questions.

Savage: Do the Spidermonkeys have any pre-game rituals?

Chris Selwood: Our pregame routine varies a lot by individual preference. We do our team warmup and one of our old favorite Spidermonkeys cheers, but in terms of what we do before the warmup and what we listen to during it, that depends on the individual.

Savage: How do you celebrate a win? And mourn a loss?

C.S.: You can tell whether we lose vs. win by the music played in our car rides home. We hate losing, so if we lose there isn’t as much talking and a lot of chill (sometimes sad) music is played. If we win, we are laughing about the weekend and playing upbeat music the entire car ride back. Losing isn’t fun. 

Savage: Favorite team hype song?
C.S.: Depends on the audience. Last year it was "How Far I'll Go" from Moana. This year it is "Halftime (Stand Up and Get Crunk)" by the Ying Yang Twins. 
Savage: Favorite team beverage?
C.S.: The cheapest thing we can find. We are trying to get more funding from our school...so I’m gonna say water here. “No comment” also works. 
Savage: Who's your MVP?
C.S.: Gotta give this to our Donovan nominee Justin Keller. He has played the last month with a cast on his broken left wrist, so he can’t mark well with that arm and can’t catch at all lefty. He’s still managed to get open on every incut, take some of the other teams top players, and have filthy layouts (including that layout greatest in regional finals). 
Savage: Favorite team to compete against?
C.S.: That’s so tough. We had some great matchups with Davidson last year and Mary Washington this year. We love playing Mary Washington because they’re so close and we play them so much and it’s always competitive. Even though we only played them last year at Nationals, John Brown may be our favorite team to play. They were very good and incredibly spirited. Almost every call that came was resolved with the players and we barely needed observers. We love that type of spirited competitive ultimate, so John Brown is our favorite, but nothing like a good regional rivalry, so tip of the cap to Davidson last year and Mary Washington this year.
