Recently SAVAGE received a message from an old customer. His request was common – did we have old designs on file? Of course we did!
His story continued to explain his love of Ultimate Frisbee, how he connected with his team and that he began to coach at various levels in promotion of the sport. Also, that a recent medical diagnosis would prevent him from continuing to play.
Every day, we help teams to look towards the future, to plan for seasons and tournaments with something as simple as uniforms. Everyone wants to look good, but more importantly people want to connect and remember.
Today, we send Eli a jersey to help him remember as he continues on his medical journey. Eli, here’s your #14 BRAH jersey. It’s headed your way!
We also ask the ultimate community to remember. Remember your old teammates and your love of the game. Remember how that fire stated. Open that old jersey drawer up and think of the first teams you were on and that old love. Know that it can and will stay with you forever. Over this long holiday weekend let’s all be thankful for the love found through Ultimate and the people who have been there along the way.

SAVAGE received some hometown love this week with an article in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. We chatted about our origins, partnerships, and plans for the future.
Here's a taste:
Savage Apparel Co. founder Todd Curran didn’t set out to specialize in producing T-shirts for niche sports leagues. It happened by chance.
“My first order was from an Ultimate Frisbee team for tuxedo (looking) T-shirts with a bow tie and cummerbund design,” said Curran, who founded the business as Savage Ultimate in 2009 in Charleston, S.C.
“After that, I started contacting other national Ultimate Frisbee teams. We also started working with local businesses and restaurants.”

It's Friday morning, I wake up, watch the sun rise over Waikiki, grab a Kona coffee and jump in my rental car to head towards the East side of the island of Oahu. For 18 years now, this is where the Hawaii Ultimate League Association (HULA) has hosted their Hopu Ka Lewa tournament.
When I arrive at the fields early Friday afternoon, everyone was in full swing prepping for the tournament. Lining fields, setting up tents and stuffing player bags before the teams start to check in at 5. Everyone is working hard, but no one is stressed, how could you be while in Hawaii surround by these beautiful sites? HULA rents out the Honolulu Polo Fields in the middle of Waimanalo (aka nowhere) that have the most incredible mountainous backdrop and the beach campgrounds where the players will stay are equally as beautiful.
At 3pm the kegs were tapped, at 5pm Check-in started, 6pm dinner was served (on frisbee plates, of course) and by 8pm the party had begun. I arrived in Hawaii not knowing a soul on the island, but by the end of the night, I had a whole crew of new friends. Everyone at Hopu is so friendly, loving and once you go, you really do become part of their 'ohana.
Saturday Morning had an early start with breakfast starting at 6:30am and games at 8am. As soon as the sun was up, the Polo fields were covered with ultimate people in all sorts of costumes and jerseys to go along with Hopu's Broadway theme this year. Some teams included Time^2, Cuts, Little Shop of Whorers, Windward Side Story and the Boozies.
As games went on, I rarely saw regular points being played. Dino Points, piggyback points, ridiculous pull plays, and yes, even a few strip points here and there kept games fun and interesting. As soon as the games ended, everyone rushed to the side of the fields where a big foam dance party started. Don't worry, Hopu doesn't disappoint.
Everyone gathered back for dinner and then the real party started, there was music, an open bar, and 500 ultimate players in a wide array of costumes ready to have a good time.
Sunday morning was a slow start for many, but games were still played and (most) people showed up (mostly) ready to play. Regardless of their varying states, their attitudes and spirits were high. At the end of the day, it was down to two teams to compete in the finals - the Ohau native team, Time^2, and the Wizards.
At 3:30pm all the teams gathered around the center field to watch, cheer on and of course heckle during the game. it was a long, nail-biting game, and what's more fitting for an accurate experience of Hopu than an impromptu dance party to start in the middle of a "quick" timeout. Once the dance party dispersed, the game started back and in the end, Time^2 walked away victorious.
After dinner, there were several shows put on for everyone to enjoy, some were traditional and others... not so traditional, interpret that how you will. That night there was also a big celebration as all of the spirit awards were given out and the last night of Hopu began.
Although Hopu Ka Lewa was now over, the frisbee and the fun were not. Monday morning started a hat tournament that was played on the beach at the campgrounds. It started early in the morning and by lunch became more of a giant beach ultimate pickup game for everyone to enjoy.
After one more day of all being together, we packed up our tents, piled into our cars and headed back towards Honolulu. It was finally time to start heading back to the real world.
Hopu Ka Lewa was unlike any other tournament I've ever been to, its memories and all the people included in them will always have a special place in my heart.
Aloha Hopu, until next year.
Continue readingThe time has finally arrived! We've been gearing up the past few months for one of the coolest tournaments around! That's right, you guessed it, it's time for Hopu Ka Lewa! SAVAGE is headed to the beautiful island of Honolulu for this exciting destination tournament.
This year's theme is BROADWAY! We are sure to see some musically themed teams in attendance so get ready for the puns! The teams won't be the only ones channeling their inner Idina Menzel, the SAVAGE tent will have an interactive 'fill in the blank' script that we are encouraging all in attendance to participate in!
Rumor has it that our Art Director, Savannah, will be there manning the SAVAGE tent. She LOVES broadway, so be sure to ask her to sing a song or two while you're checking out all the awesome gear we have available.
This tank is a just a snippet of the what we will be offering at Hopu.
"Wait a minute, a tournament in Hawaii, why is my team not going?" Well, the bid process is extremely cut throat. Only the coolest teams get their bids to Hopu accepted. If you think your team can make the cut start planning for next year! Its never too early to start planning!

Ultimate is more than just a sport to those that play. It is a community, a platform to spread love and positivity, and a lifestyle. Our new friend Laura Birnbaum is a shining star in showing what ultimate can truly be and how it can enrich lives worlwide.
Laura is a student at Sacred Heart University where she is studying to get her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. In October, she spent two weeks on a service learning trip in Antigua, Guatemala with other members of Sacred Heart University. She explains how the different layers of therapy naturally came alive through her work
"So, how can I incorporate all of these elements into an activity that the kids will enjoy participating in? How do I involve the grasping of objects, the speaking and comprehension of language, and the gross motor skills required for walking/running? Hmmmmm…
[Cue lightbulb] Ultimate!"
Before the trip, Laura contacted SAVAGE and asked for a disc donation. She explained that she would love to use Ultimate as a form of physical therapy while in Guatemala. She was able to put a smile on these kids' faces just by spreading the sport of Ultimate and putting a disc in their hands.
A big thanks to Laura for going out of her way and making this video of her trip detailing where she went and what she did! Be sure to check out those awesome kids playing with their new discs at 3:35. If you have time, watch the entire video, Laura did an amazing job with it and it deserves to be seen!
To read about Laura's trip from her perspective, check out the write up she sent our way!
Big thanks and hugs go out to Laura from everyone here at SAVAGE for doing what she does and extending the legacy of love in Ultimate!

Earlier this summer, you began with track workouts. You then added weight room nights to your routine. You cut out fast food and even fasted through Halloween. You've been studying, researching and training for this one day.
That day is today — Election Day 2016.
Make sure you stretch before you head out to your polling booth. And remember your training. What happens if you have a flat tire? You've trained for this. What if you forget your ID? You've trained for this. What if you arrive at the wrong polling place? You've trained for this.
Let your voice be heard. Be a part of Team USA and prove you're a winner. Get out and VOTE!

We’re having one of those giddy moments over here at SAVAGE HQ today, and we want to share that joy with you! To immediately see what’s making us so happy today, check out the Devin Super Tramp production video below. Eeeeee!!!
Our partners over at Skyzone Trampoline Park recently collaborated with the Devin Super Tramp team to make a kick-butt video. It showcases one of the many things you can do at one of their parks scattered around the country – Ultimate Dodgeball. It’s dodgeball in a multi-directional trampoline pit, and it’s a sports experience all its own.
SAVAGE has for the last 2 years been the official apparel partner for the Ultimate Dodgeball Championships. Each year has been a showcase of sportsmanship, talent, and killer moves. It thrills us to the core that when producing the video, Sky Zone contacted us to outfit their team in SAVAGE fully sublimated tank tops from our Summer Line.
These guys are looking good!
A big shoutout and thanks to our friends over at Sky Zone and the Devin Super Tramp team!
