Savage + Toys For Tots: UltiGift Recap

Savage + Toys For Tots: UltiGift Recap

Photo from UltiGift Toledo, Ohio.

Toys for Tots is a charitable organization run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Toys for Tots gives toys to children during the holidays when their families can’t afford new gifts. Through Savage's UltiGift hat tournaments and partnered tournaments, we collect toys to donate to Toys for Tots during the holidays.

Savage began collecting toys to donate to Toys for Tots ten years ago. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is based out of Triangle, Virginia, just an hour from Savage HQ. Our goal is to help the Ultimate community do what they do best - make a positive impact on the communities around them. Did you miss UltiGift this year? Mark your calendar for September 2020 to reach out to Savage so you can host or participate in a tournament.

UltiGift Tournaments in 2019 took place all over the U.S. and Canada. The more the merrier! All those tournaments add up to a lot of gifts. Aria Discs and the AUDL joined in our UltiGift efforts this year, donating a disc for every jersey sold in November. (Is a disc a toy? That’s a discussion for another day.)

We collected hundreds of new toys to donate this year. Austyn Pedersen, our Events Coordinator, poured his heart into making UltiGift a successful drive for Toys for Tots, despite hiccups from a new registration system.

We’d like to thank Austyn (Savage Events Coordinator), the Tournament Directors, and event participants for making UltiGift 2019 possible. A personal message from Austyn:

Many amazing humans donated their time and support for this cause, including the AUDL, and Aria discs, to whom we are incredibly grateful.

From my personal experience as a camp counselor for children with Type 1 Diabetes, caring and loving parents do everything in their power to allow their children to live, without reminders that life can be difficult.  Children deserve to enjoy being kids, and we have a way to make that happen. Savage has access to some of the best communal fan bases in sports, as affirmed by the individuals requesting to take their time running these events all over the country (and in Canada, who allocate their toy donations locally).

To all of those brilliantly generous people, thank you.

      Fully Sublimated Jersey Sizing

      Fully Sublimated Jersey Sizing

Trouble finding your fit? We’re here to help.

Our fully-sublimated ('full sub') gear has slightly different sizing than our spot-sublimated and screen-printed gear. We thought it would help to show the most common sizes on different bodies. We’ll keep updating this post with more photos and sizes.

The Size Chart with measurements is available hereDon’t forget, you can always email us and ask about sizing if you need help.

      Fit Tips:

Our fully sublimated short-sleeve jerseys, long-sleeve jerseys, and sun hoodies all have the exact same cut in the body.

If You're Between Sizes, we suggest ordering the bigger size for full sub jerseys. Some of our staff wear one size smaller for spot sub/screen printed gear, others wear the same size. In the photo above, Dan is wearing a Men's Large in both types of jerseys.

If You're Tall: If you're tall, you may need to size up for long sleeve jerseys. Jake, 6'2", wears a Men's L for short-sleeve jerseys and a Men's XL for long-sleeve jerseys.

Women's Cut: Our women's jerseys are more fitted than our men's cut. Some people prefer to wear men's jerseys. Our staff are split; you can see their honest opinions below our photos.

Note if you're thinking about the different cuts: Women's jerseys are smaller than men's - we suggest sizing down one if you're going from women's to men's.

Our thoughts on Men's vs Women's Cut jerseys:

Ariel, 5'7", female (wears a Men's S): For my body type, the women's cut is a little loose in the chest and very fitted in the hips. I prefer the men's cut for the way it fits and the smaller neckline. I also find it easier to tuck in; and personally, I think it makes me look more athletic.

Vega, 5'3", non-binary (wears a Women's M): I'm short and curvy, and the womxn's cut is really great for me. When I work out I almost always wear a Savage jersey (full subs and screen prints). If a men’s jersey fits at my chest it will have way too much fabric in the waist, but get stuck at my hips. Savage womxn’s jerseys actually fit over my hips, and I like the shorter cap-sleeves. The womxn's jersey is flattering and comfortable without being too fitted.

Eug, 5'5", female (wears a Men's S): Since I have a more straight body type, I prefer to wear the men's sizes. I also like the men's sizing because I like my athletic gear to fit a little looser to avoid feeling limited in my movement. I feel that the men's fit is more versatile on my body and I can wear it relaxed and baggy or tuck it in when I need things to be more controlled. I occasionally will wear a women's size and while a medium fits me perfectly (tighter but comfortable fit all around), I prefer a women's large for the extra space. I appreciate the switch up, but can always rely on the men's small.

From the Desk of Dan Lee: Thankful During the Holidays

From the Desk of Dan Lee: Thankful During the Holidays

Last week I got a great question in one of my emails, "What is something that is consistent in your life and you're grateful for?"

That question came at the tail end of a week in which my dad went to the ER with chest pains to find that he needed a procedure to unclog one of his arteries that had been nearly completely blocked. In this same month, one of our team members had torn their ACL and needed surgery; other team members were showing up to work with other injuries or tragic family news.

It can be tough to remain grateful in the midst of personal pain and the struggles of those around you, but I was thankful for the opportunity to try.  My answer was simple: I'm grateful for my life and that I'm healthy. I was diagnosed with melanoma in 2015, a tiny a**hole of a mole that left untreated likely would've killed me. Lucky for me, my now-wife has eagle vision and spotted that sucker from the other room.

So I'm happy I'm alive. Duh.

What makes this whole flying through space on this big-blue-marble experience so great, though, is when I know I'm making a difference with the team and work I do every day (Savage-brag incoming). When the same Savage team member who tore her ACL tells me that she's grateful to work for such a supportive company and team, when I see that we're making a UV protective jersey* that benefits our customers' wellbeing, when I get to support great causes and organizations like Breast Cancer Research and Welcome Home like we did this past month, that makes the living part pretty cool.

On top of my own gratitude for such a great opportunity to live my best Savage life, there were some great personal achievements and milestones among our team that happened this month, too. We had among our team acceptance into a new costume-design program, continued acclaim for a recent poetry book, appointment as President of our local Ultimate community, and an engagement!

Our team is having its ups and downs, and yours will too. As we get into another holiday season full of revelry and jubilation, remember to always be there for each other. When your teammates get hurt or are struggling personally, be there to lift them up. When it's time to celebrate, express your honest joy. Be grateful that you have them and be worthy of their gratitude because that's what this living is all about, the impact that you have on one another.

I know all of us at Savage are grateful for you and wish you the best holiday season.

      - Dan Lee, Vice President of Sales

International Spirit of the Game Day 2019

International Spirit of the Game Day 2019

International Spirit of the Game Day (aka iSOTG Day) is on Saturday, Dec. 7th this year. It's intended to promote what is to many, the best thing about Ultimate. This year’s theme is It’s Not Just High Fives. iSOTG activities around the world are intended to create a ‘global understanding and bond of what SOTG means’.

Partners like Savage donate prizes for people around the world who promote Spirit of the Game on in creative and demonstrative photos and videos shared that day.

The Global Spirit Map from 2018

Spirit of the Game means different things to different people. For some, it means adhering to the rules exactly. For others, it means developing a friendly environment between teams. ERIC's 5 tenants of Spirit of the Game are a great way to remember all of the things Ultimate players of any ability and experience should keep in mind to make Ultimate a welcoming, fun sport for all. Think about it for yourself - what could you improve on?

International Spirit of the Game Day (iSOTG Day) began as Early Recognition Is Critical (ERIC) Awareness Day in 2014. In 2015 the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) and ERIC combined forces to encourage communities around the world to raise awareness and embrace Spirit of the Game Day through activities around the world.

"I always remember this moment from Marisa Rafter's Callahan video. It's my favorite Ultimate video, because she's an amazing player, but this tiny moment always sticks in my mind as part of why I love Ultimate." - Vega, Savage Marketing Coordinator

Something we at Savage love about Spirit of the Game is how good spirit spreads outside of games. Many of us have made lifelong friends through Ultimate. Good spirit and holding each other up in a game lead to sideline conversations, hanging out after games, and strong friendships. At Savage many of us are involved in Richmond Ultimate, and at the beginning of the day you’ll find folks talking about the game they played against one another last night or the new rules we should know (2020-2021 Official Rules of Ultimate, by the way).

We'd love to hear from you. What does Spirit of the Game mean for you in Ultimate, on or off the field? Make sure you tag #isotgday on socials this Saturday to spread your unique spirit and potentially win prizes from Savage and iSOTG's other partners.

2019 Veterans Open: No Soldier Left Behind

2019 Veterans Open: No Soldier Left Behind

      Guest Author: Rob Banden

The 2019 Veterans Open took place November 7th. Derek Green and Rob Banden of St. Charles Missouri, with the support of the St. Charles County Disc Golf Club and many generous sponsors, were able to raise just above $5,300 to be donated to Welcome Home. Welcome Home is a local organization that helps transition veterans to civilian life and support those at risk of homelessness. Savage is thrilled to have been able to sponsor a great event like this. Read all about what this event meant to Rob, a veteran himself, and his hopes for next year:

      No Soldier Left Behind

For the past few years Derek Green of the St. Charles County Disc Golf Club (SCCDGC) in St. Charles, MO has been the Tournament Director of the Veterans Open tournament for local disc golfers, veterans, and the general public.

In the past, Derek has made it a point to do something special in this tournament for veterans and active duty military. His offer can range from discounted entry for veterans to completely free play. Having been an Air Force Veteran, I played in the 2018 Veterans Open free of charge. However, while the tournament was a lot of fun, the turnout was rather low.

Months later, I approached Derek with a proposal to change the Veterans Open to a fundraiser event where all proceeds would be donated to helping veterans. In doing so, we could have a chance at a better turnout as well as an opportunity to give back to the veteran community who sacrificed so much for our country.

As a veteran myself, I felt it necessary to ensure the proceeds were donated to a worthy cause. I began researching local non-profit organizations that assisted the veteran community. I came across the Welcome Home organization; Welcome Home supports transitioning veterans and their families, including those at risk of becoming homeless. Their mission to leave no veteran behind hit very close to home for me. There was a point in life after my service that I could have ended up in such a place if not for the help of my family. Some veterans are not as fortunate to have a strong support system like I did, so I wanted to help ensure other veterans could receive a second chance at civilian life.

I scheduled a tour a few months later with Welcome Home and was given an informative VIP tour of their facility. I shook the hands of their welcoming volunteers, and immediately felt welcomed by everyone at this organization. It was clear to me that Welcome Home would be a worthy recipient of our donations. More information about Welcome Home can be found on their website.

Even with the draw of fundraising for such an important organization, we knew filling this tournament would be a difficult task. We decided to hold a fundraising raffle to hopefully draw higher attendance and help us raise more money to be donated. Derek and I began to reach out to the disc golf community and other companies for donations to our event.

We were overwhelmed and elated with the amazing responses we received. After all was said and done, we collected just over $4,000 in sponsorship donations to be used for closest-to-the-pin and raffle prizes. I could not believe it. It made me incredibly proud that so many people in our community and across the country wanted to help our veterans, especially through the sport of disc golf. It meant the world to us.

On the day of the tournament, we were incredibly fortunate to have 87 competitors show up to play, including 17 veterans or active-duty military. Some even made the trip from outside the state of Missouri. It is hard to put into words how truly wonderful the feeling was, and I caught myself standing in awe multiple times that day. Seeing the smiles, the laughs, the comradery, all of the handshakes and thanks we received — it was almost surreal. This turnout was without a doubt possible because of our generous sponsors and donations.

Another phenomenal building block of this tournament that I would like to mention is the strength of our local disc golf community and the SCCDGC. I have only been a part of the local community for a little over a year, and on the board for a few months now, but it is truly inspiring to see what this group is capable of. They stepped up massively, and with their generous monetary donations, all veterans who joined us that day were able to play for free. This event would not have been possible without the support of the disc golf community.

We would like to sincerely say thank you to all those who donated prizes, donated monetarily, and those who came to join us for the day. Our initial goal for this event was to raise $2500. Incredibly, the St. Charles disc golf community came out in full force and we were able to raise just over $5,300 to donate to Welcome Home! This means that our donation alone will cover the cost to house, feed, and help a veteran through a 90 day transition period at Welcome Home. It will hopefully give them and their families a well-deserved second chance at life. And that, to us, is priceless.

The SCCDGC plans to continue to run this tournament as a charity event every year on the weekend before Veterans Day. My personal goal is to eventually double the size of this tournament to 180 competitors next year and make it the largest of its kind. And as the years pass, I hope more sponsors will consider joining our goal of supporting our less fortunate warriors who have served our great country. Because no soldier should ever be left behind.

PinkLine Recap | Savage + Breast Cancer Awareness Month

PinkLine Recap | Savage + Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We committed to donating $1000 minimum and raised money through the sale of PinkLine jerseys.

The PinkLine jersey was available as both an item in the online store and customizable for teams. 41 people supported our PinkLine campaign, including the University of Maryland Astro Quakers, who ordered PinkLine team jerseys soon after the opportunity arose.

We raised $287 through jersey sales, and Savage will be donating a 2.5x donation of $717.50 to meet our goal. In total, we will be donating $1,004.50 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. We're looking forward to next year, and believe we can increase our donation in the future. Thank you for your support!

"I think it's great that Savage committed to raising money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which gives 90% of donations to research. My mom had breast cancer and it was nice that Savage wanted to do this in support of people like her."
